Shop Late 19th Century Qashqai Rug

Late 19th Century Qashqai Rug

$4,995.00

This intricate work of art is an amazing example of the Qashqai people who now reside in multiple semi-nomadic tribes in modern day southern Iran. The meanings and motifs woven into this rug are as vast and deep as the history of the Qashqai people, who’s history dwarfs us here in the US. Textiles, and rug weaving specifically, hold familial, tribal and spiritual values. Rugs such as these are taken from place to place as they are worked on, sometimes by a handful women in the group who overall spend upwards of 4,000 hours on one piece such as this. Wool weft and pile woven on a raw wool warp, this piece was no undertaking for a novice weaver. You may notice the reverse side seems to be more vibrant and colorful, that is due to fading of the vegetable dyes over time. Overall this piece is in great condition considering its material, age and travels. Please note condition issues and reach out for more photos if desired.
